Scotus and Will Ockham Flashcards
what was the purpose of scotus
a need to separate faith and reason
what is voluntarism
where WILL takes over priority, not INTELLECT
why does will take priority
it safeguards God’s omnipotence (great power)
so then, what is the belief of God’s will taking priority
because God willed it, god believe its good
what is the problem with voluntarism
its arbitrary, and natural theology would disinegrate
why is voluntarism arbitrary
if you take God out of equation, voluntarism becomes arbitrary
- if you use intellect, then God’s knowledge = limited
- if no God, nothing based off natural law, and idea of “good” is swayed by opinion
why would natural theology disappear under voluntarism
natural theology = based off of human reason (intellect) that takes priority
-> in voluntarism, WILL takes priority, which means no place for natural theology
what is the explanation for WILL taking priority
HUMANS: when making a choice, has limited knowledge -> will to choose is limiting
GOD: if intellect is used to make decisions, its limited by will -> if all powerful, will must take priority
what is william of ockham’s philosophy
ockham’s razor = the simplest explanation / method
what does william of ockham believe in
a voluntarist that believes in nominalism
what is nominalism
the idea that universals exist in both things and names
what is the problem with universals being in names
God holds all the names; if there is no God, then society becomes God
how do you fight voluntarism
understanding universals
