Scoliosis Flashcards
scoliosis definition
scoliosis is a lateral curvature of the spine (and also rotational deformity)
causes
most commonly is idiopathic but can be secondary to neuromuscular disease, tumour, skeletal dysplasia or infection
idiopathic scoliosis
more common in females and most presents in adolescents as it usually only causes cosmetic problems
younger children with scoliosis
usually have an underlying cause and may progress quicker to a severe curve
painful scoliosis
any painful scoliosis warrant an urgent MRI
mild non-progressive scoliosis management
observation does not require surgery
larger curve
may require surgery for cosmetic reasons or to improve wheelchair position in neuromuscular disorders
severe curves
can result in restrictive lung defect
