Describe the definition of Scleroderma
It is a systemic autoimmune disease
Describe the aetiology and pathophysiology Scleroderma
Pathophysiology: It is characterized by increased synthesis of collagen, which can lead to sclerosis.
List the main signs and symptoms for Scleroderma
Skin: healed pitted ulcers on the fingertips.
Cardiovascular: scarring, arrhythmia, pericarditis
Pulmonary: fibrosis, hypertension, dyspnea and chest pain
Digestive: acid re-flux, constipation and diarrhea
Describe the responses/benefits of EXP for people w/Scleroderma
Counteracts: muscle weakening effects and aerobic deconditioning effects of disease; EXT: is likely to slow down or reverse other systemic effects
Describe the contraindications to EXP for people w/Scleroderma
Refrain from exercise if there is any evidence of cardiac or pulmonary distress, i.e. chest pain, dyspnoea
What are the recommendations and modifications for people w/Scleroderma?
Aerobic training: 20 mins at 70% of VO2peak, if possible increase to 80%
Resistance: 4 sets of 8-12 repetitions
Aim to take care of skin
