Describe the definition Lupus
It is a systemic autoimmune disease
Describe the aetiology and pathophysiology Lupus
It is when the immune triggers inflammation and apoptosis; it affects major organs, blood vessels and nervous system; it may be genetic, bacterial, viral. Treatment includes anti-rheumatic meds (DMARDS, NSAIDS, steroids)
Describe signs and symptoms
Earlier: fever; malaise, joint pains; myalgias; fatigue.
Later: malar rash; red scaly patches on skin; arthralagia; perdicarditis, myocarditis, endocarditis; pulmonary hypertension
Describe the responses/benefits of EXP for people w/Lupus
EXP is safe for individuals w/Lupus, and early intervention is expected to reverse cell damage
Enhances: anti-inflammatory effects and autonomic control
Reduces: fatigue and depression
Increases: aerobic capacity, QOL
What are the recommendations and modifications for people w/Lupus?
Aim for 60-80% HRmax when doing aerobic training as low intensities are less effective; aim for an RPE 50-60%; consider the clients co-morbidities when setting the intensity
