Pulmonary Rehab Flashcards
Define pulmonary disease
It is a disease/condition which affects the structures (airways, vasculature, parenchyma) of the lungs
What are the signs and symptoms of pulmonary disease?
dyspnea; wheezing; productive cough; chest pain/discomfort; barrel chest; elderly; reduced exercise capacity and QOL
List the conditions under obstructive, restrictive, and other
Obstructive disease: COPD, asthma, cystic fibrosis, bronchiectasis
Restrictive disease: interstitial fibrosis, occupational lung disease, sarcoidosis, multiple sclerosis, parkinsons
Other: pulm hypertension, lung cancer, lung surgery
Briefly describe the definitions of some Obstructive conditions
Chronic bronchitis: inflammation of bronchi that leads to airway narrowing Emphysema: inflammation/enlargement of alveoli Asthma: episodic bronchoconstriction Cystic fibrosis: genetic disorder of overproduction of mucus within lungs COPD: progressive lung disease characterized by persistent cough
What is the general pathophysiology of pulmonary disorders?
Foreign particles enter within the lungs causing inflammation. However pulm patients have chronic inflammation which eventually leads to structural changes and symptoms
In terms of demographics, what % of people are affected w/COPD and asthma?
COPD: worldwide 9.2%; NZ 9.3%; 3rd leading caause of death worldwide Asthma: NZ 25% of adults have symptoms; 11% diagnosed; major cause of absence from work
What are the main goals of Pulmonary Rehab?
Reduce symptoms; optimize functional status; increase participation
What are the recommendations for patients w/Pulm disoders
Aerobic: F= >3-5 d/wk; I=30-80% peak work rates; T=>30min/session; T=both lower and upperbody exercise Resistance: F= 2-3d/wk; I= >1 set, 10-15 reps 60-70% 1RM; T= 8-10 exercises; T= concentrate on unsupported upper body exercise
