What is schizophrenia?
-A servere mental disorder charcterised by profound disruption of cognitio and emotion
What does schizophrenia affect?

What is type 1 schizophrenia ?
-Episodic
-Mainly positive symptoms
What is type 2 schizophrenia?
-Chronic
-Mainly negative symptoms
What are positive symptoms?
-Those that appear to reflect an excess or distortion of normal functions
Positive: What are hallucinations?
-Unreal perceptions usually auditory, visual, olfactory or tactive (being touched)
Positive: What are delusions?
-Beliefs that are not real
Positive: What is disorganised speech?
-A result of abnormal thought processes
-Slipping from one topic to the next
Positive: What is disorganised/catatonic behaviour?
-Reduced reaction to immediate environment
-Rigid posture
-Aimless motor activity
What are negative symptoms?
-Those that appear to reflect a diminution or loss of normal functions
Negative: What is speech poverty?
-Lessened speech fluency + productivity

-Reduction in interests + desires
-An inability to initiate and persist in goal directed behaviour

What is the criteria for SZ according to the DSM?
2 out of:
-Delusions
-Hallucinations
-Disorganised speech
-Catatonic behaviour
-Negative symptoms
-Social/occupational dysfunction
-Must persist for at least 6 months
What is the criteria for SZ according to the ICD?
-whether at least two positive or negative symptoms are present in the patient
-Must be present for at least 1 month
Why is SZ difficult to diagnose?
-does not present as one set of clear-cut symptoms/ symptoms present differently in each patient

-Inability to experience joy or pleasure
