Science Volcanoes Flashcards
Elevated landform with an opening at the top where lava and other rock fragments and volcanic materials are ejected
Volcanoes
Government sector that is in charge of any volcanic-related activity in the country
PHIVOLCS (Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology)
Also called as stratovolcano. IS formed by high viscous lava. Most dangerous type of volcano
Composite Volcano
Also called as scoria cone. Eruptions are short-lived. As the lava cools at its descent, rock breaks down and form a conical landscape
Cinder Cone Volcano
Is formed by loose and fluid lava that flows over. Shape is usually low and broad. Lava does not shoot up high in the air
Shield Volcano
Exhibit volcanic activities such as rumbling, crater glow, eruption, and earthquakes within the last 10,000 years
Active Volcanoes
Volcanoes show no record of eruption for the past 10,000 years
Inactive/Dormant Volcanoes
Have no record of eruption/no magma supply
Extinct Volcanoes
It is a mixture of molten or semi molten rock, gases and some solids. Found underground
Magma
Molten rock that breaks through the Earth’s surface
Lava
Is the least violent type with highly fluid lava flowing out from the several vents
Hawaiian
Violent type of eruption featuring a continuous ejection of magma and gas. Results in the formation of volcanic bombs and cinder cones
Strombolian
Thick viscous magma flows around the vent as solid lava and dust are ejected
Vulcanian
Is the most violent and destructive eruption which is caused by viscous magma and dissolved gas
Plinian/Vesuvian
Heat beneath the ground surface
Geothermal Energy
