English Kinds of Poems Flashcards
A poem that is also also known as a name poem spells out names or words with the first letter in each line to describe someone or something the poet deems important.
Acrostic Poem
A poem that is a long and narrative poem that normally tells a story about a hero or an adventure. It can be presented as an oral or a written story.
Epic Poem
Is traditionally a three-line stanza with a 5/7/5 syllable count. It focuses on the beauty and simplicity found in nature.
Haiku Poem
Is typically written to praise a person, event, or thing, and it is usually quite short in length.
Ode Poem
Has a fair amount of freedom in writing. It can rhyme or not, can have many lines or stanzas as the poet wants, and can be about anything the poet likes.
Free Verse Poem

Villanelle Poem
Is a form of poetry in which the poet or speaker expresses grief, sadness, or loss.
Elegy Poem
Is a form of verse, usually humorous and frequently rude, in five-line, predominantly anapestic trimeter with a strict rhyme scheme of AABBA.
Limerick
Is used to describe the main building block of a poem. Has its own concept and serves a unique purpose.
Stanza
Is a type of literature that conveys a thought, describes a scene or tells a story in a concentrated lyrical arrangement of words.
Poetry
Is a problem or concern connected to a larger issue that does affect society in general.
Social Issue
Is a tendency or inclination to believe or act in certain ways.
Disposition
Is a nineteen-line poetic form consisting of five tercets followed by a quatrain.
Villanelle Poem
Tells a dramatic or emotional story. It has four lines and rhymes. Can be compared to modern pop songs.
Ballad Poem
A poem that has 14 lines and usually deals with love
