Science of Learning Flashcards
What does multitasking do
causes you to switch tasks (decreases performance)
What does the pomodaro technique do
prevents task switching
- creates sustained work periods without task switching and regular planned breaks so no burnout
How does pomodoro technique work
- 25 mins timer = deeply focus
- time is up = 5-10 mins break
- repeat cycle = 3-4 times
- 30 mins break
what is the spacing effect
spacing out learning directly enhances content retenation (long term memory)
what are unefficient study methods
rereading, highlighting, verbatim copying notes
- repeated exposure, lots of input/very little output
Why do we think inefficient study methods are efficient
- rapid short term learning
- intuitive and endorsed –> unaware of efficient study methods
- effective of fluency –> feels like we’re learning because we recognize it
what are efficient study methods
combining input and output
1. practice test (retrieval practice effect)
2. self explanation (actively engaged with learning materials)
What is the retrieval practice and spacing effect (3x3 rule)
method where you successfully recall the material 3 times in one initial study session recall same material on 3 subsequent sessions with each session spaced roughly one week apart
Interleaved practice
all lessons at one –> all practice questions at once
blocked practice
1 lesson –> 1 practice question –> 2 lesson –> 2 practice question
What is interleaved
mix up practice questions in random order to decide which unit each question applies to
what are desirable difficulties
slowly build up but long term benefits to learning
successive relearning
spacing and retrieval practice
