science inquiry - qualitative & quantitative methods Flashcards
yr11 unit 1
interviews
researcher gets participants’ responses to a series of questions, either in focus groups or individual interviews. this can be done in structured interviews or semi-structured interviews. strengths of more detailed and rich responses, but difficult to analyse and compare
open ended surveys
group of participants about or opinions from participants is collected, measured & analysed via non predetermined answer choices. strengths of allowing respondents to elaborate and provide reasoning, limited by time consuming to analyse as well as collect data
physiological
data relating to unconscious, biological experiences (e.g. heart rate) that are easily and accurately measured, minimal bias. however they do not explain why results occur
close ended response
individuals provide numerical responses to a set of questions. strengths of understanding strength and or direction of response on a continuum, limited by not providing reasoning, and interpretations may be subjective
mixed methods
data collection using both qualitative and quantitative data. strength of allowing research questions from different perspectives and counterbalances flaws. limited by requiring more expertise and resources to collect & interpret results
