biological psychology - nervous system Flashcards
yr 11 unit 1
central nervous system
body’s master control unit, processes and controls
brain
divided into three major parts, hindbrain, forebrain, and midbrain
spinal cord
31 segments of nerves between the brain and peripheral nervous system; connects the brain to other areas of the body via the PNS’ sensory input, and then returns back to the PNS to respond via motor neurons
peripheral nervous system
complete set of neurons outside the central nervous system, links the CNS to the other parts of the body
somatic nervous system
transmits information between the sensory receptors and CNS, controls voluntary movement and has sensory neurons and motor neurons
automatic nervous system
controls involuntary body functions and is self regulatory, independent of conscious
sympathetic nervous system
prepares body for stressful situations via activating flight or flight response
parasympathetic nervous system
maintains homeostasis and counterbalances the sympathetic nervous system
