biological psychology - cerebral cortex Flashcards
yr 11 unit 1
cerebral cortex
outer part of the brain (segment of the forebrain), separated into four lobes
left hemisphere
reception & processing of right side, language based learning, analytical thinking, sequential processing, logical reasoning
right hemisphere
reception & processing of left side, spatial tasks, appreciation of art & music, direction and expression of emotion, recognition of faces & patterns
frontal lobe
largest lobe responsible for personality & higher order thinking
prefrontal cortex
responsible for executive functions (attention, impulse control, social regulation, problem solving/decision making, working memory)
primary motor cortex
voluntary body movement, contralateral in nature
broca’s area
located in left hemisphere, control muscles for production of fluent speech. damage can make sufferer unable to articulate fluent speech
corpus callosum
bundle of nerve fibres that allow messages to transferred between the two hemispheres
parietal lobe
responsible for integrating sensory information and perception, coordination & spatial awareness, includes hemi-spatial neglect
primary sensory cortex
contralateral and creates meaning from raw sensory information
occipital lobe
perceives and processes visual information
primary visual cortex
contralateral and transformed fragmented visual information from the eyes into a picture
temporal lobe
involved in memory, specifically long term & facial recognition
primary auditory cortex
located in both hemispheres, left processes verbal sounds, right processes non verbal (tone, pitch, volume)
wernicke’s area
on the left of the tempral lobe, responsible for understanding language & assigning meaning to words/language comprehension
