sits on top of the hindbrain and under the cerebral hemisphere, acts as a sensory switchboard - passing information from the spinal cord to the forebrain and vice-versa

A

network of nerves about the thickness of a finger, screens incoming information so higher brain centres can attend to important information. plays a role in sleeping, waking, and levels of alertness
