Science - Force, Motion, Energy - 4th grade Flashcards
What is a position?
It can be described by locating an object relative to another object or the background.
What are some examples of position?
- The hare is eats of the tortoise.
- The tortoise is behind the hare.
- The tortoise is north of the large plant.
What is speed?
It is a measure of motion.
What are some examples of speed?
On the study guide, they gave the example that the tortoise “slow and steady” won the race. The tortoise had a constant speed.
Looking at the graph on speed, you are to interpret a few things about the hare:
- He began with a faster speed than the tortoise.
- The hare decreased his speed after 15 meters.
- The hare stopped to rest after 50 seconds and started to move again 20 seconds later.
What is force?
A push or a pull
The greater the mass of an object, the _____ effect a force will have on it.
less
How does gravity relate to force?
Gravity is the attraction between objects. Gravity can only be felt when at least one of the objects is massive like Earth. Earth pull you toward its center.
How does friction relate to force?
Friction is the resistance to motion created by two objects moving against each other. Friction causes heat. Rub your hands together to feel the heat caused by friction.
Forces can cause or change motion in the following directions:
- up
- down
- forward
- backward.
Forces can also increase or decrease __________.
speed
Energy exists in two forms which are __________ or ________.
potential or kinetic
What is potential energy?
It is stored energy. If an object has potential energy, it has the potential to move.
What are exempts of objects with potential energy?
- Roller coaster at the top of a hill.
2. Ball about to be dropped.
What is kinetic energy?
It is the energy of motion.
