Science Ch. 7 Flashcards
What is a decomposition?
A compound breaks down into two or more simpler substances (opposite of a synthesis reaction)
AB -> A+B
What is a synthesis reaction?
Two or more substances react to find a new substance
A+B -> AB
What is a single replacement?
One element takes place of another in a composition
AB+C -> A+BC
What is a double replacement?
When two different compounds exchange positive ions and form two new compounds
AB+CD -> AC+BD
What are the two things that always come out of a combustion reaction?
Water and carbon dioxide
What is a combustion?
Substance reacts rapidly with oxygen after producing heat and light
(Oxygen goes in and heat and light come out)
What is an oxidation reduction?
RedOx
Oxidation Electrons are Is transferred from Losing electrons one reactant to Reduction another Is Gaining electrons
What are the five factors that affect reactions?
Temperature, catalysts, concentration, stirring, and surface area
What is the difference between an endothermic and an exothermic reaction?
Exothermic: out
Endothermic: absorbed
What happens during the breaking of bonds?
Requires energy and happens on the left side of the equation
What happens when forming bonds?
Releases energy and happens on the right side of the equation
Breaking bonds does what?
Increase the surface area
Do particles move slower or faster in hight temperatures?
Faster
What can a catalyst help you with?
Speed up reaction rates
What is a reaction rate?
Rate in which reactants change into products over time
