Ch.15 Physics Flashcards
What is the energy of motion?
Kinetic energy
What is the formula of an object’s kinetic energy?
KE=1/2m•v squared
What is potential energy?
Energy stored in an object as a result if a position or shape
What does GPE depend on?
Height and mass
What is elastic potential energy?
The energy of an object that is stretched or compressed
What are the six forms of energy?
Mechanical, chemical, electrical, thermal, nuclear, and electromagnetic
Explain the energy conversions of the seagulls’ method to eat an oyster
Gull lifted oyster increasing it’s GPE, gull drops the oyster increasing it kinetic energy, oyster hits rocks gaining thermal energy and losing any GPE or kinetic
What is the law of conservation of energy?
Energy cannot be created or destroyed
What is thermal energy?
The motion of microscopic particles in matter and the slowing of an object because of friction
As an object falls what happens?
GPE is concerted into kinetic energy
At what point during a pole-vaulter’s jump is his GPE the greatest?
At the highest point
What does Einstein’s equation imply about mass and energy?
Mass and energy are equal and can be converted into each other
Does Einstein’s equation E=mc squared suggest that mass and energy together are conserved?
Yes
What is a nonrenewable energy source?
Energy that cannot be replaced once it’s gone
What are the four nonrenewable energy sources?
Oil,gas,uranium,and coal
What are the advantages and disadvantages to using fossil fuels as energy sources?
Advantages-cheap,readily available(abundant in supply)
Disadvantage-pollution
What is a renewable energy source?
Energy source that can be replaced in a short amount of time
What happens in hydroelectric power?
GPE from the water begin the dam is converted into KE when flowing down
What are the six renewable energy sources?
Hydroelectric, solar, geothermal, wind, biomass, nuclear fusion
What happens what do hydrogen fuel cells do when they combine hydrogen and oxygen?
They generate
What are two ways energy resource can be reserved?
Use less and increase its efficiency
What does atomic fission and fuel produce?
Nuclear energy
How do you recognize energy?
By looking at the changes it cause such as motion and sound
What are fossil fuels?
Remains of once living organisms found underground
What is the energy stored on wood?
Biomass energy
What is energy?
Ability to do work
