SCIENCE 9: Weather & Climate Flashcards
It is the condition of the atmosphere at a specific place and time.
Weather
Give the 5 Factors that Affects the Weather.
-Temperature
-Wind
-Air Pressure
-Humidity
-Precipitation
It is the degrees of hotness or coldness of a place. It is affected by solar radiation reaching the Earth’s surface.
Temperature
Is an instrument that measures temperature.
Thermometer
It is the movement of air in the atmosphere.
Wind
Instrument that tells the direction of wind.
Windvane
Instrument that measures wind speed.
Anemometer
It is the force caused by the weight of air in the Earth’s surface.
Air Pressure
Instrument that measures atmospheric pressure.
Barometer
It is the amount of water vapor in the air.
Humidity
Instrument that measures humidity in the air.
Hygrometer
It is the water falling from the atmosphere, in the forms of rain, snow or hail.
Precipitation
Instrument used to measure precipitation.
Rain Gauge
It is the general pattern of weather in a certain area over a long period of time.
Climate
Give the 5 Factors that Affects the Climate.
-Latitude
-Altitude
-Bodies of Water
-Topography
-Ocean Currents
It is an imaginary line that is parallel to the equator.
Latitude
What are the 3 Major Climate Zones?
-Tropical Zones
-Temperate Zones
-Polar Zones
The Earth’s axial tilt is?
23.5 degrees
As the latitude increases, what happens to the temperature?
Places Far from Equator - Low Temperature (Cold)
As the latitude decreases, what happens to the temperature?
Places Near Equator - High Temperature (Hot)
It is the height above sea level.
Altitude
What happens when the altitude increases?
The air temperature decreases (gets colder) as the altitude increases
The climate of the place is influenced by the surrounding bodies of water.
Bodies of Water
-Land heats and cools faster than the sea.
-Coastal Areas have lower temperatures than Inland Areas.
-Places that are far from the bodies of water have extreme climates.
Mountainous areas greatly affect the amount of precipitation in a certain region.
Topography
Side of the mountain facing the wind.
Winward Side
Side of the mountain that faces away from the wind.
Leeward Side
An area of significantly reduced rainfall behind a mountainous region, on the side facing away from prevailing winds, known as its leeward side.
Rain Shadow
What factor that affects climate bring warm water and rain from the equator to the poles and cold water from the poles toward the equator.
Ocean Currents
It is an increase in the temperature of Earth’s atmosphere.
Global Warming
Is the process of which radiation from the Sun is absorbed by greenhouse gases and not reflected back into space.
Greenhouse Effect
Give some examples of greenhouse gases.
-Carbon Dioxide
-Nitrous Oxide
-Methane
-Water Vapor
-Chlorofluorocarbon
What are the main causes of Global Warming or Enhanced Greenhouse Effect?
-Burning of Fossil Fuels
-Intensive Farming to Produce Crops & Livestock Raising
-Deforestation
-Human Activities
It is a change in the average weather of a given area or region.
Climate Change
