behavior

camouflage

cooperation
A behavior used to select and attract a mate for reproduction.
courtship
A temporary state of inactivity that can be broken when conditions are favorable for growth.
dormancy
An animal whose main source of body heat comes from the environment; a cold-blooded animal.
ectotherm
An animal whose body produces most of the heat it needs; a warm blooded animal.
endotherm
A state of inactivity during winter when an animal’s biological processes slow down.
hibernation
A state of stability or equilibrium that is maintained by constantly making adjustments in a changing environment.
homeostasis
A behavior that is inherited rather than learned.
instinct
Gained through experience.

Movement from one location to another, especially when it occurs according to the season of the year.

To imitate closely in some way.

A group of individuals of the same species living together in the same area at the same time.

A part of an organism’s body that detects stimuli. Many different body parts can be receptors, including cells, hairs, and organs.

A system in which animals belonging to a group are ranked in terms of status.
social hierarchy
Something that directly causes a living thing to act in a certain way.
stimulus
An area of land defended by an individual or group in order to control the resources in that area.
territory
A sound or series of sounds made by the respiratory system for the purpose of communicating.
