The founding father of the Hebrew people. He is an important figurefor the three major Abrahamic religions: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.
Abraham
A Hebrew-speaking people from ancient Mesopotamia who lived in part of the land of Canaan. According to the Hebrew Bible, Israelites, also called Hebrews, are the “chosen people” of God.
Israelites
The scattering of Jewish people outside their traditional home land in Israel.
Jewish Diaspora
A major world religion that developed among the Israelites in Mesopotamia. It is characterized by a belief in a single god who revealed himself to the prophet Abraham.
Judaism
The belief in or worship of one god.
monotheism
A person who is said to receive messages from God to be taught to others.
prophet
A religious teacher, responsible for interpreting the Torah and teaching about Judaism.
rabbi
A building where Jews meet for religious worship and instruction.
synagogue
The Hebrew Bible. Known as the Old Testament in Christianity.
Tanakh
The first section of the Hebrew Bible. It consists of five books of scriptures and sacred teachings.
