Arabian Peninsula
Also called Arabia. It is a region located in the Middle East, on the southwestern edge of Asia. The region’s geography includes deserts, oases, mountains, and coastlines. A person from the Arabian Peninsula.
Arab
A Muslim leader, regarded as the successor of the Islamic prophet Muhammad.
caliph
Five acts required of all Muslims. They are considered the foundation of Muslim life.
Five Pillars of Islam
Writings that record the traditions and sayings of Muhammad. These writings include religious laws and stories about Muhammad’s life.
Hadith
A major world religion founded in the early 600s by Muhammad. Followers of Islam are known as Muslims. Muslims believe that there is only one God (Allah) and that Muhammad is his messenger.
Islam
A building for Muslim prayer.
mosque
A follower of Islam.
Muslim
One of the two main branches of Islam. Shiites believe Muhammad designated his son-in-law Ali to be his successor. They do not recognize the first four caliphs as Muhammad’s successors.
Shia
A follower of Shia, one of the two main branches of Islam.
Shiite
One of the two main branches of Islam. Sunnis believe Muhammad did not pick a successor. They consider Muhammad’s father-in-law Abu Bakr to be Muhammad’s rightful successor. Sunnis are often described as orthodox Muslims.
Sunni
(about 570 – 632) The founder of Islam. Muslims believe he is God’s messenger. Muhammad’s teachings are recorded in the Quran.
Muhammad
[kuh-RAN] The holy book of Islam. Muslims believe the Quran contains the exact words of God as told to Muhammad.
