Math Definitions Flashcards
A mathematical statement that can include numbers, operations, and letters.
algebraic expression
A letter or symbol that stands for one or more numbers.
variable
A mathematical statement that says two expressions are equal.
equation
Opposite operations. Inverse operations undo each other.
inverse operations
To get the variable alone on one side of an equation or inequality inorder to solve the equation or inequality.
isolate the variable
A mathematical sentence that compares two numbers or expressions with an inequality symbol.
inequality
A line that shows equally spaced marks called tick marks that are labeled with numbers. A number line can show tick marks with different types of numbers.
number line
A value that, when substituted for a variable, makes a mathematical sentence true.
solution
A plane with an x-axis and a y-axis. Using the numbers on the axes, you can give the exact location of a point.
coordinate plane
A variable whose value depends on the value of another variable. It is graphed on the vertical axis, or y-axis, of the coordinate plane.
dependent variable
A variable whose value doesn’t depend on another variable. It is graphed on the horizontal axis, or
x-axis, of the coordinate plane.
