SCI and TBI Flashcards
Discuss where nerves emerge in the spinal cord
Nerve C1 emerges between skull and C1
Nerves C2- C7 emerge superiorly to same pedicle
Nerve C8 emerges inferiorly to pedicle C7 and the rest of the nerves follow this pattern… emerging inferiorly
Quadriplegia
Complete paralysis affecting both arms and legs
trunk and pelvic organs also
Cause of quadriglegia
spinal injury between c1-c8
Paraplegia
all part of trunk, pelvic organ and lower limbs
Complete Spinal Cord Injury
All sensory and motor ability are lost below the spinal cord injury
Cause of paraplegia
injury in thoracic,lumber, sacral
Incomplete Spinal Cord Injury
Some motor and sensory lost
Quadriparesis and Paraparesis
weakness in affected areas, partial paralysis
C1- C2 injury
severe motor and sensory loss of head and extremeties
Ventilation
C3 Injury
Better control of head
May still require ventilation
C4 Injury
Enhanced ability to breath independenty
What is spinal shock
period of hypoactivity of the spinal cord below area of injury lasting hours to weeks
What causes spinal shock
Severe spinal cord injury
Features of Spinal Shock
Flaccid paralysis of striated muscles
Flaccid paralysis of bladder
Loss of reflexes
Paralytic Ileus
Main cause of Spinal Cord Injury
Vehicle accidents
