what is sz
sz is a psychotic disorder characterised by a profound disruption of cognition and emotions
6 features of sz
- about 50% of sz have times with/without symptoms
- episodes of psychosis tend to appear between ages of late adolescence to mid 30s
- males usually have symptoms earlier
- people with psychosis earlier tend to get it worse
- men tend to be in hospital more often
most chronic and disabling of the mental illness 1% of pop
how many symptoms do you need for a sz diagnosis
2 or more symptoms for at least a month
what is a positive symptom
something is added to your behaviour
what are negative symptoms
something is taken away from your behaviour

- lack of energy
- social withdrawal
- flatness of emotion
- not looking after self
- lack of pleasure
- speaking little
state the positive symptoms of sz
- thought insertion
- movement disorder
- disordered thinking
- paranoid delusions
- delusion of grandeur
- delusions of persecution
- hallucinations
what is thought insertion
a person believes their own thoughts have been put there by someone else
what is movement disorder
agitated movements, repetition of movements over and over again
what is disordered thinking
when the individual finds it hard to put their thoughts into logical sense
what are paranoid delusions
the belief someone is against them/ trying to harm them
