Q

How can hallucinations be explained?

A

Morrison: Triggers like sleep deprivation cause hallucinations. People hear them in maladaptive ways wich cause behaviours like social widthdrawl. The emotions this produces reinforces the voices and makes the problem worse

Q

How can negative symptoms be explained?

A

Beck: He uses the idea of the cognitive triad and thinks the person endorses dysfunctional beleifs about themselves, their abaility to feel pleasure and holds a cynical world view. Their mental filters allow them to see the world in a biased way which adds to their pessimism and creates the negative symptoms

Q

How does a lack of preconscious filters lead to schizophrenia?

A

Frith: The filters that inhibit sensory information don’t work so they get overwhelmed and are able to see multiple interpretations of events. This stops them being able to select and carry out an appropriate course of action. These can be to do with issues such as increased dopamine.

Q

What is the supporting research?

A

Barch: Schizophrenics do slower on the stroop test as they can’t filter out the sensory information which supports the idea about lack of filters

Q

How is the study reductionist?

A

It reduces a complex disorder to a single explanation

Frith: It’s the result of faulty cognitive mechanisms

Q

How does the sucess of CBT support the theory?

Q

What is the intergrated model of schizophrenia?

A

Genes combine with life events and social stressors with affects the dopamine system. The increase in dopamine causes issues with cognitive processing
Needs to be considered in a holistic way
