What are type of symptoms in schizophrenia?
Positive; delusions, hallucinations, change in thoughts or behaviour
Negative; withdrawal from world, no interest in things around them, appear emotionless and flat
Describe some negative symptoms of schizophrenia
- losing motivation/interest in life and activities incl. relationships and sex
- reduced concentration
- not wanting to leave house
- altered sleeping patterns
- less likely to initiate conversations, less comfortable with people or feeling there’s nothing to say
What are triggers for development of schizophrenia in those at risk?
- stress i.e. bereavement, work etc.
- drug abuse
What pregnancy and birth complications are thought to be implicated in schizophrenia?
Asphyxia during birth
Low birth weight
Premature labour
Describe diagnosis of schizophrenia
Uses a checklist, generally includes;
- 1 or more of the following for duration 1 month; delusions, hallucinations, negative symptoms i.e. apathy
- other causes ruled out i.e. bipolar and drug use
- affecting life
What are the subtypes of schizophrenia?
Not majorly used anymore
- Paranoid
- hebenephric
- catatonic
- undifferentiated
- residual
- simple
- unspecified
Describe paranoid schizophrenia
Most common type
Hallucinations and/or delusions
Speech and emotion may be unaffected
Paranoia
Describe hebephrenic schizophrenia
AKA “disorganised”
Usually develops in 15-25yos
Disorganised behaviours and thoughts, short lasting delusions and hallucinations
May have disorganised speech patterns
Often little emotion in facial expression, voice tone, mannerisms
Describe catatonic schizophrenia
Unusual, limited and sudden movements
May switch between v active and v still
May not talk much
May mimic others speech and movement
Describe undifferentiated schizophrenia
Some signs of paranoid, hebephrenic and catatonic but doesn’t obviously fit into one category alone
Describe residual schizophrenia
Hx of psychosis but only -ve symptoms
Describe simple schizophrenia
-ve symptoms most prominent early and get worse
Rare to experience positive symptoms
Describe unspecified schizophrenia
Meet general conditions for schizophrenia but not any category specifically
