Scales of measurement 3.1 Flashcards
1
Q
Increasing confidence in the validity of your
operational definitions
A
1) conventional methods
2) Use a manipulation check
2
Q
Conventional methods
A
•Already passed peer review •Relates to previous research •Researchers have knowledge of the strengths and weaknesses
3
Q
Manipulation check
A
make sure your manipulation (IV)
worked by taking a measure of it’s construct
4
Q
Scales of measurement for quantitative stats
A
- Nominal data
- Categories that have no inherent order to them, just labels
- Ordinal data
- Categories that have an order to them, difference between them are not equal
- Interval data
- Categories (units) that are ordered and each is equivalent in size, but no true zero
- Ratio data
- Ordered, equivalent categories (units) with a true zero
5
Q
Central tendency
A
Mode: most frequent, nominal data
Median: mid point, ordinal, interval, ratio
Mean: average, interval and ration
6
Q
Spread of Data
A
Range: number of possible scores in dataset
Standard Deviation:the average distance a score falls from the
mean
Variance:squared deviation
7
Q
Normal distribution
A
Probability distribution with a mean
of zero that follows the 68-95-99.7 rule/
