Scale and size of microbes Flashcards
Micro-organism (microbes)
organisms only seen through a microscope e.g. bacteria, protozoa, algae, fungi (viruses sometimes classified as such).
Microscope
optical instrument used to view objects typically unseen by the naked eye.
Microbiologist
a scientist who studies microscopic life forms and processes
International system of units ( SI systems)
only system of measurement with an official status in almost every country in the world
SI unit
standard unit of measurement defined by the SI system
SI prefix
a series of prefixes to units in the International System of Units
Metre
the SI base unit
Millimetre
1 thousandth of a metre in the metric system
Nanometre
one thousandth of a millimetre and one thousandth-millionth of a metre
Viruses
a submicroscopic infectious agent that only replicates within the living cells of a microscopic organism
Bacteria
part of a large unicellular group of microorganisms that have cell walls but lack organelles and an organized nucleus
Protista
a kingdom mostly built up of single-celled organisms such as the protozoa, simple algae and fungi, slime moulds, and (formerly) the bacteria. Which are then divided among up to thirty phyla, and some have both plant and animal characteristics.
Fungi
any of a group of spore-producing organisms feeding on organic matter
Prokaryotes
cells without a nucleus and only ribosomes
Eukaryotes
contain a nucleus as well as other organelles
