Microbe ecology Flashcards
Denitrification
the loss or removal of nitrogen or nitrogen compounds specifically
Nitrogen fixing bacteria
prokaryotic microorganisms capable of transforming nitrogen gas from the atmosphere into “fixed nitrogen” compounds, like as ammonia, that are usable by plants.
Decomposers
organism that breaks down dead organic material
Autotrophs
an organism that can make its own food from inorganic materials without needing other organic matter in the process
Parasitism
a symbiotic relationship between species, where one organism, the parasite, lives on or inside another organism, the host, causing it some harm, and is adapted structurally to this way of life.
Mutualism
a relationship between dissimilar organisms where both partners benefit
Commensalism
an organism living in close association with another organism of a different species where one partner benefits but the other does not and is not harmed.
