Acquired immunity Flashcards
Antigens
a protein or carbohydrate that causes an immune response when introduced into the body
Lymphocytes
type of white blood cell that differentiates into either B-cells or T-cells.
Phagocytes
type of cell within the body capable of engulfing and absorbing bacteria and other small cells and particles.
Antibodies
protein called immunoglobin that has a reaction with a specific antigen and is part of the body’s defense mechanism against toxins and disease
Agglutinate
clump together
naturally acquired immunity
when the person is exposed to a live pathogen, develops the disease, and becomes immune as a result of the primary immune response.
artificially acquired immunity
protection produced by intentional exposure of a person to antigens in a vaccine, so as to produce an active and lasting immune response
