microbial diseases Flashcards
Vector
a DNA molecule used as a vehicle to artificially carry foreign genetic material into another cell where it can be replicated
Primary Host
a larger organism that harbors a smaller organism
Secondary Host
organism that harbors sexually immature parasites and is required by the parasite to undergo development and complete its life cycle.
Malaria
a parisitic disease caused by a protist of the genus Plasmodium , transmitted by the mosquito
Tuberculosis
an infectious disease caused by the bacterium - mycobacterium tuberculosis
HIV/AIDS
The human immunodeficiency virus causes the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. AIDS is a sexually transmitted disease called HIV.
Thrush
Yeast infection in the mouth and throat, characterized by patches of white, caused by the fungus Candida albicans
Retrovirus
an RNA virus that infects animal cells and replicates by being converted to double-stranded to double-stranded DNA. The DNA copy of the RNA genome that is formed integrates into the host’s DNA.
Opportunistic infections
infections by organisms that don’t usually harm a healthy person but will harm those with a weak immune system
Prophylaxis
treatment given to prevent a disease from developing
