Botany: alteration of generations and developmental trends Flashcards
Gametophyte generation
the part of a plant life cycle that gives rise to the sex cells and that has haploid nuclei
Sporophyte generation
the spore capsule that grows from a gametophyte
Meiosis
type of nuclear division associated with sexual reproduction, producing four haploid cells from a single diploid cell, the process involving two cycles of division.
Mitosis
type of nuclear division where two daughter cells are produced from one parent cell with no change in chromosome number
Haploid
cell nucleus containing one type of each chromosome
Diploid
cell nucleus containing two of each chromosome type in homologous pairs and formed as a result of sexual reproduction
Fertilization
fusion of male and female gametes to give rise to zygote and then subsequently develops into a new organism
Germination
process by which an organism grows from a seed or similar structure
Sexual reproduction
method of reproduction involving fusion of haploid gametes to form diploid zygote. Zygote develops into new individual organism - in the life of history of this development meiosis takes place to form haploid gametes.
Asexual reproduction
process by which organisms multiply without formation and fusion of specialized sex cells (gametes)
