sampling Flashcards
what is a sample
a group in a research that represents a target population
what is a target population
the people that are a sample is meant to represent
what is a sampling technique
- methods used to gather a sample
what are the 5 different techniques for sampling
- systematic
- random
‘- opportunity - volunteered
- stratified
what is random sampling
every person in the target population has a chance to be in the sample
strengths for random allocation
no bias in the selection of the sample
weaknesses for a random sampling
- people can say no so could be time consuming
- can be unrepresentative
what is opportunity sampling
consists of people from the target population who are available
strengths for opportunity sampling
- very simple and easy
weaknesses within opportunity sampling
- may not be representative
- could have researcher bias
- not everyone has a chance to be selected
what is systematic sampling
predetermined system used to select participants
strengths for systematic sampling
not affected by researcher bias/choice of participants
weakness within a systematic sample
sample may not be unrepresentative
what is volunteered sampling
people self take part in a study either when asked or responding1
strengths within volunteered sampling
- easier and a quicker method
weakness within a volunteered sample
may not be representative
what is a stratified sample
subgroups within a population and participants are obtained from each part of the target population
strengths for stratified sampling
- not affected by researcher bias
- sample is likely to be representative
weakness within stratified sampling
difficult and time consuming
