what are ethical guidlines
they are guidelines from the BPS code of ethics, used for psychologists when undertaking their psychological research
what is informed consent
when participants are told the real aims and expected outcomes of a a study

what are the 2 alternatives of informed consent used to control it in a research study
presumptive consent - taking part in the research, it can presume further participants would do the same
Prior general consent - using the use from previous studies
what is deception
- when information is deliberately withheld from participants or they are knowingly misled.
- deception means participants can’t give consent
ways of controlling deception through a a research study
at the end of a study the participants should be fully debriefed and told the aim of the research
what is protection from harm
participants should not experience any psychological or physiological harm during a study and should not change in any way
how to control the protection from harm during a research study
the researcher should remain participants of their right to withdraw throughout and after the research and terminate the study if needed
what is the right to withdraw
participants should be reminded of their right to withdraw themselves or their data from the research at any point
what is privacy within the ethical guidelines
the right of individuals to decide how information about them will be communicated to others. information must be confidential
what is debriefing within the ethical guidelines
all participants should be debriefed at the end of the study, including revealing the real aims of the study, checking on the welfare of participants, offering support, and answering questions about the study
what is confidentiality
it refers to the right participants have which concerned any personal data of their being protected
