Sampling Flashcards
Define target population
A specific group of people the research is often intrested in
What are the types of sampling techniques?
- Random
- Opportunity
- Stratified
- Volunteer
- Systematic
What is random sampling?
Each member of the target population has an equal chance of being selected.
Give some examples of random sampling techniques
- lottery method
- random number generator
Strength of random sampling?
- Avoids researcher bias as researcher can’t choose ppts
Limitations of random sampling?
- can be unrepresentative by chance
- time consuming to get a full list of target population
What is systematic sampling?
- need population list
- pick every nth person
Strength of systematic sampling?
- avoids researcher bias
- if there is existing list of target population then it can be a quick method of selecting a sample
Weakness of systematic sampling?
- by chance could be unrepresentative
- if target population is very large getting list could be difficult
- not truly random unless you select a number at random to begin with
What is opportunity sampling?
Choses people who are the most convenient or most avaliable
Strength of opportunity sample?
- easy and cheap
- fast
Weakness of opportunity sample?
- researcher bias as they choose
- limited sample
What is volunteer sample?
Self-selected sample. Advertisements are placed in newspapers or internet
Strength of volunteer sampling?
- Easy
- gives access to wide variety of ppts
Weakness of volunteer sampling?
- overly keen ppts = DC, socially desirable answers
- not be generalisable to target population
- more motivated causing sample bias
