Sampling Flashcards
What does opportunity sample mean?
Researcher approaches person needed/suitable
What’s an advantage to opportunity sample?
Less time consuming than others plus easy & convenient
What’s a disadvantage of opportunity sample?
Researcher bias only approach people who look friendly . Generalisation open
What’s random sampling?
Each number has an equal chance of being selected
What’s an advantage of random sampling ?
No researcher bias makes sample more representative
What’s a disadvantage of random sampling ?
Can be time consuming / those selected may refuse to take part
What is stratified sampling?
Involves classifying target population into categories
What’s an advantage of stratified sampling?
Very representative of target population researcher makes sure sample has same proportion in sub groups
What’s a disadvantage of stratified sampling?
Time consuming making sub groups & selected randomly
What is systematic sampling?
Selecting participants at fixed intervals
What’s an advantage of systematic sampling?
Less bias compared to opportunity . Researcher has no control over who takes part
What’s a disadvantage of systematic sampling?
List used hidden certain participants are selected. Sample less representative
What is volunteer sampling?
Involves asking for volunteers
What’s an advantage of volunteer sampling?
Easy, convenient, less time consuming
What’s a disadvantage of volunteer sampling?
Unusual interests by volunteers sample may be biased , not represantive
