Sampling Flashcards
What is volunteer sampling?
Participants responding to an advert/asking to be a part of the research
How does the researcher get a volunteer sampling?
Placing adverts/flyers in a public space
Why are volunteer samplings convenient and have no researcher bias?
Less time consuming as participant chooses to take part themselves
Why might there be shared characteristics in a volunteer sample?
Researcher placed the flyer/advert reducing generalisability
What is random sampling?
Every member of the target population has an equal chance of being chosen to take part in the study
How do researchers conduct a random sampling?
Getting a full list of participants, put names into a hat and draw names out
Why are random samplings unbiased?
Representative sample of target population
Why are random samplings difficult to conduct?
Large target population where you need to identify people so its time consuming
What is an opportunity sampling?
Consists of people who are available at the time of the study and fit the criteria
How might a researcher conduct an opportunity sampling?
Asking people in the library to take part in your study at that moment in time
Why are opportunity samples quick to complete?
Convenient and less time consuming for the researcher
Why might opportunity sampling not be representative of the target population?
Shared characteristics
What is a stratified sampling?
Classifying population into categories and choosing a sample which consists of participants from each category in the same proportions as they are in the population
E.g. if the population is 60:40 (males:females) then the sample should be the same
How is stratified sampling more representative of the wider target population?
Classified into categories and equally chosen from there
Why might there be bias in stratified sampling?
Certain groups may be overlooked in the sampling
