Quantitative and Qualitative Data Flashcards
How is quantitative data expressed?
Numerically and statistically
How is quantitative data analysed?
Analysed using statistics and measures of central tendency e.g., mean, mode, median
Where is quantitative data likely drawn from?
Controlled situations such as laboratory experiments
Closed questions
What does quantitative data deal with?
‘What’ rather than ‘why’,
E.g. no words are provided in their responses
How can you use quantitative data to assess whether the results are due to chance?
Analyse data statistically
Why is it a strength that quantitative data can be easily analysed?
Results can be represented in graphs and charts to analyse
Why is it good that quantitative data uses operationalised variables?
Makes the study easier to repeat and we can test for reliability
Why is quantitative data viewed as more scientific?
Results can be measured objectively
Why is it a weakness that quantitative data lacks rich detail?
Results are often superficial and lack validity
What is a weakness of quantitative data producing narrow, unrealistic information?
Only discusses on small fragments of behaviour so results will be less valid
How can qualitative data be expressed?
In detailed descriptions/words/images
What type of question does qualitative data use?
Open questions where participants can give answers in their own words with no formal measure
Where can qualitative data come from?
Case studies and real-world settings (blogs, magazine articles)
What does qualitative data deal with?
‘Why’ rather than ‘what’
E.g. participants give their opinions
How can qualitative data be analysed?
Using methods such as thematic analysis
