Q

How do PET scans work?

A

Radioactive chemical dye is injected into the blood, as the chemical breaks down it releases radioactivity which can be picked up on the scan

The more active the brain, the more radioactivity will be picked up by the scan

Q

What does a PET scan produce?

A

Colourful image

Darker/warmer areas = red = more activity

Lighter/cooler areas = blue = less activity

Q

How do fMRI scans work?

A

A person lies in a large cylinder perfectly still

Magnet and radio waves are sent through the body

As neutral activity increases in the brain, blood flow increases, requiring more oxygen

Builds an image based on haemoglobin

Q

What is the MRI and structure?

A

Body’s water molecules inside the MRI magnet line up so they face either North or South - previously randomly arranged

Q

How are CAT scans done?

A

Many angles to form a full picture as X-Ray is only a 2D image

Q

How does Raine support PET scans?

A

Found differences in brain activity between murderers and non-murderers by using PET scans so develops our understanding of how brain activity can influence behaviour

Q

Why do PET scans lack ecological validity?

A

16
Q

Why are PET scans considered unethical?

A

Frequent exposure to radiation so could be invasive

17
Q

Why are fMRI scans scientific?

A

Objectively measure brain activity directly

18
Q

Which group of people does fMRI scans exclude?

A

People with pacemakers, so not generalisable to wider population

19
Q

Why is it good that fMRI scans are standardised?

A

We can repeat the process to test reliability of results

20
Q

Why are fMRI scans considered unethical?

A

Patients may be claustrophobic and have difficulties in the scans due to enclosed spaces

21

Why is it good that CAT scans are standardised?

A

We can repeat the process to test reliability of results

22
Q

Why do CAT scans lack ecological validity?

A

Artificial setting so results are harder to apply to real life situations

23
Q

Why are CAT scans scientific?

A

Objectively measure brain activity directly

24
Q

Why do CAT scans lack ecological validity?

A

Taken place in artificial settings so results are harder to apply to real life situations
