Cross-Sectional Studies Flashcards
What is a cross-sectional study?
Data is collected at one moment in time/over a
short period of time
What do cross-sectional studies look at?
Development of something but do this in a different manner to longitudinal
How are cross-sectional studies different to longitudinal studies?
Instead of studying a person over a period of time they would study two separate
groups at the same time
Why are cross-sectional studies better than longitudinal studies?
Cheaper and easier to conduct as it takes less time
Why can we gather participants easier in cross-sectional studies?
Don’t have to follow them for years
How are cross-sectional studies more ethical than longitudinal studies?
Withdrawal and consent are easier to get for short term studies rather than longitudinal ones
Why are cross-sectional studies usually in less depth and detail?
They’re a short period of time
Why do cross-sectional studies have less direct representation of what is being studied?
Individual differences between people so less cause and effect
Why do cross-sectional studies have issues with cohort effect?
Similarities in the environment of people of the
same age which aren’t related to their actual age
e.g. similar upbringing/events
Extraneous variables affect the validity of results
