Sampling Flashcards
What are the 5 key types of sampling?
- Opportunity
- Random
- Systematic
- Stratified
- Volunteer
What is opportunity sampling?
Sample is taken from those who are available at the time. Participants fit the criteria the researcher is looking for
What are the strengths of opportunity sampling?
- Convenience- quick and easy
What are the limitations of opportunity sampling?
- May not be representative
- Researcher bias
What is random sampling?
Every member of the population has an equal chance of being chosen. Researcher makes a list of names and choose randomly (e.g. lottery method)
What are the strengths of random sampling?
- Mostly unbiased
What are the limitations of random sampling?
- Unrepresentative
- Somewhat biased
- Participant refusal
What is systematic sampling?
Involves selecting every nth person from the entire population
What are the strengths of systematic sampling?
- Removes researcher bias
What are the limitations of systematic sampling?
- Participant refusal
- Time consuming
What is stratified sampling?
Classifying the population into categories and choosing a sample consisting of participants from each category
What are the strengths of stratified sampling?
- More representative
- Can be generalised
What are the limitations of stratified sampling?
- Time consuming
- Not 100% representative
What is volunteer sampling?
Participants volunteer when asked by researcher- e.g. advert
What are the strengths of volunteer sampling?
- Participants are willing and motivated
- Quick and easy to carry out
