What is privacy and confidentiality?
Privacy is the right to control information about yourself. Confidentiality refers to our right under the Data protection Act to have any personal data protected
What is the BPS?
British Psychological Study- has its own ethical guidelines
How to deal with informed consent?
Participants should receive a consent letter to sign before participation in a study. Children under 16 should provide a signature of parental consent
How to deal with deception?
Participants should be fully debriefed at the end of a study- made aware of true aims and any details they were not previously told
How to deal with protection from harm?
Participants should have a right to withhold data if they wish. Researchers should ensure participants their behaviour is typical, and counselling may be provided if necessary
How to deal with confidentiality?
Personal details must be protected. Researchers tend to refer to participants by numbers or initials, to maintain anonymity. During briefings, participants should be reminded that their data will be protected
