Correlations Flashcards
1
Q
What are correlations?
A
Investigation into association between two co-variables
2
Q
What is a positive correlation?
A
As one co-variable increases, so does the other
3
Q
What is a negative correlation?
A
As one co-variable increases, the other decreases
4
Q
What is zero correlation?
A
When there is no relationship between co-variables
5
Q
What are the differences between correlations and experiments?
A
Experiments:
- Manipulate IV, and measure effect on DV
- Cause and effect
6
Q
What are the strengths of correlations?
A
- Useful preliminary tools (precise measure of how co-variables are related)
- Quick and economical
7
Q
What are the limitations of correlations?
A
- Lacks causation
- Intervening variables may cause the relationship between co-variables
- Can be misunderstood and misinterpreted (relationships sometimes presented as causal when they are not)
