Salutogenesis Flashcards
What is salutogenesis?
- Focusses on the origins of good health rather than the origins of ill health
- Views health as a movement on a continuum on an axis between total health and total ill-health
- Asks the question, how is health created/sustained?
What are general resistance resources?
- Key factors are the resources (buffers) available to make such a movement towards health possible-things people can use to keep healthy
- Internal resources- attitudes and beliefs
- External resources- family, income, access to assistance
- Reduce the impact of stressors
- Promote health even in the presence of illness
What is meant by health as a movement?
- The ability to comprehend the whole situation and use the resources available (GPR) was called ‘sense of coherence’
- Thus capacity was a combination of people’s ability to assess and understand the situation they were in and to find a meaning to move in a health promoting direction that is: comprehensible, meaningful, manageable
What is comprehensibility?
- “it makes sense to me”
- Life has certain predictability and challenges can be understood
- Develops as a result of predictable demands throughout the lifespan
- To do with the knowledge of health
What is meaningfullness?
- “it is worth it”
- Resources are enough to cope with a challenge
- Develops in response to experiencing the balance between demands and resources
- Includes motivation- and how this affects our behaviour
What is manageability?
- “I have what it takes to do this”
- Life has meaning, challenges are worth investing energy in
- Develops as a result of experienced commitment and engagement in overcoming challenges
- The emotional/spiritual aspect of health
What is the salutogenic framework for health promotion?
- Health promotion becomes proactive- empowerment approach to help
- Supports a persons ability to use their resources to manage stressors and move towards health
- Doesnt ignore a person’s illness or risk factors
- Supports the midwifery philosophy of wellness and promoting childbirthas a normal life event
How is comprehensibility applied to midwifery?
-How women are able to anticipate events, understand challenges, and increase preparation through the actions of their midwife or interaction with their midwifery service
How is manageability applied to midwifery?
How women strengthen their ability to recognise and use their own internal resources and resilience behaviours and strengthen external connections through the actions of their midwives or their interaction with their midwifery service
How is meaningfullness applied to midwifery?
How women are supported in being engaged, committed and connected to their childbearing experience through the actions of their midwives or interaction with their midwifery service
What is sense of coherence?
The ability to comprehend the whole situation and use the resources available

- A woman’s strength of SOC impacts on satisfication, mental wellbeing, birth experience and choices, and predicts future parenting and coping strategies
- Supporting and enhancing SOC in the perinatal period has the potential to create long lasting positive impact on womens health
What are the Qualities needed to promote SOC?
