Salivary Glands Flashcards
What is saliva ?
Hypotonic watery secretion containing many substance
What are some substances in saliva ?
- mucus
- enzymes
- proteins
- antibodies
- inorganic ions
What is the function of saliva ?
- lubricate and bind masticated food
- moisten and dissolve food
- begin digestion
- aspetic
- coat oral cavity
- teeth maintance and repair
What are the 3 major salivary glands ?
- parotid
- sublingual
- submandibular
What are the 3 minor salivary glands ?
- buccal
- labial
- lingual
- palatine
What is the purpose of the parotid gland ?
Mainly serous
Produces thin watery secretion
Rich in enzymes and antibodies
What is the purpose the subingual glands ?
Predominately mucous cells
Produce a viscid secretion
What is the purpose of submandibular gland ?
Contains serous and mucous secretory cells
What do the exocrine glands do ?
Secrete substances onto a surface via a duct
What are the 2 portions of the exocrine gland ?
- secretory portion
- conducting portion
What is the secretory portion ?
- acinar or tubular
- may be branched
- produces secretory product
What is the conducting portion ?
- can be branched or unbranched
- may modify or add to secretion
What are the intecalated ducts ?
- lined by cubodial epithelium
- conduct secretions from acini (A) to straited ducts
- join in lobule to form straited duct
What are features of the straited duct ?
- lined by tall columnar epithelium with large nuclei towards apex
- basal cytoplasm has interdigitation of cytoplasmic process and columns of mitochondria
- Na + pumps reabsorbed Na+ and Cl- and replace K+ and HCO3- salivary goes from isotonic to hyptonic
- secretes lysozymes and IgA
