kidney function 4 Flashcards
how the glomerular filtrate rate controlled externally to the kidneys ?
extrinsic control maintains arterial blood pressure by controlling GFR
how is glomerular filtrate rate controlled internally to the kidneys ?
- intrinsic control protects renal capillaries from hypertensive damage and maintain a healthy GFR
what activates the sympathetic nervous system
vasoconstricts afferent arteriole = decreased GFR
reduces surface area of filtration barrier via mesangial cells = decreased GFR
stimulates renin release
what can cause renin to be released ?
sympathetic activity
what does an increase in GFR cause?
cause greater excretion of salt + water and decrease blood volume/ pressure
what are the two types of natriuretic peptides ?
- a type secreted from atrial myocardium
- b type secreted from ventricular myocardium
what is the action of natriuretic ?
acts on collecting duct cells
inhibits Na entry through epithelial sodium channels
inhibits renin production and aldosterone release
what does diuretic do ?
- inhibit ADH release
what are some hypotensive effects ?
- decreases blood pressure by systemic vasodilation
increases GFR by dilating afferent arterioles
