Pancreas Gland Flashcards
Describe the structure of the pancreas
- exocrine portion that forms bulk of tissue
- endocrine gland in the form of pancreatic islets - islets of langerhan
- collangenous capsule that invaginates to form the speta between lobules through which runs larger ducts
Describe the cellular arrangement in the islets :
- arranged in irregular cords around capillaries
- cells are smaller and more lightly stained then exocrine cells
What do the different cell types in the pancreas secrete ?
- delta cells secrete somatostatin
- F (PP) cells secrete pancreatic polypeptides
- beta cells secrete insulin
- alpha cells secrete glucagon
What is pancreatic juice released in response too ?
- CCK
- secretin
- gastrin
What does pancreatic juice contain ?
- enzyymes
- proenzymes
- bicarbonate ions
What do proenzymes do ?
Prevent autodigestion
What do bicarbonate ions do ?
Help neutralise chime
What is the functional unit of the pancrease ?
Acinus
Cluster of cells that resemble a berry
Describe acinar cells
- epithelia cells with round basally located nuclei
- has basophillic cytoplasm
- well developed rough ER and golgi
Describe centroacinar cells :
- epihelial cells with pale nuclei and sparse pale cytoplasm
Where are the centroacinar cells located ?
- in the centre of the acini
What do centroacinar cells form ?
Terminal lining of intercalated ducts
What do the centroacinar cells secrete ?
- water
- electrolytes
What causes centroacinar cell secretion ?
- secretin from the enteroendocrine cells of duodenal
What are some differences between the pancrease and salivary glands ?
- striated ducts in parotid but not pancreas
- centroacinar cells in pancreas but not parotid
- islets of langerhan in pancreas not in parotid
