What type of medication is Salbutamol?
It is a sympathomimetic.
This means it mimics stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system.
What is the action of Salbutamol?
It stimulates BETA 2 receptors in bronchial smooth muscle resulting in bronchodilation.
What route is used to administer Salbutamol, and what is the associated onset, peak and duration?
Route: NEB.
Onset: 2-5 min.
Peak: N/A.
Duration: 1-2 hrs.
What conditions indicate the use of Salbutamol?
Asthma - moderate to severe/life threatening.
COPD exacerbation
Anaphylaxis & Allergic reactions.
What are the adverse effects of Salbutamol?
Dysthymias in large doses.
Shakes and tremors.
What are the contraindications of Salbutamol?
Nil for NSW Ambulance.
What is the correct dosing of Salbutamol for Asthma/COPD?
For patients < 5yrs old, the correct dose is 2.5mg (2.5mg in 2.5ml nebule) via Nebuliser, repeatable whilst indicated with no maximum dose.
For patients 5yrs or older, the correct dose is 5mg (5mg in 2.5ml nebule) via Nebuliser, repeatable whilst indicated with no maximum dose.
