What type of medication is glucose 10%?
A
Principle energy source for body cells, especially the brain.

What is the route, onset, peak and duration of glucose 10%?
A
- Route: IV
- Onset: 30sec
- Peak: 30sec
- Duration: Dependent on the severity of the hypoglycemic episode.

What are the uses/indications of glucose 10%?
A
Hypoglycemia: when BGL < 4mmol & decreased LOC.
Newborn resuscitation: When BGL < 2.6mmol.

What are the adverse effects of glucose 10%?
A
- Tissue necrosis if extravasated from vein occurs.
- May aggravate brain damage in head injuries and strokes
- May precipitate Wernicke’s Encephalopathy in alcoholics with a thiamine deficiency.

What are the contraindications of glucose 10%?
A
Nil for NSW Ambulance

What is the preparation and dosage of Glucose 10%?
A
- Preparation: 10% - 50g per 500mL bag.
- For Hypoglycemia:
- < 10yo: 0.5g/kg bolus (max bolus 15g)
- Repeat: whilst indicated
- Max dose: no maximum
- 10yo+: 15g bolus
- Repeat: whilst indicated
- Max dose: no maximum
- < 10yo: 0.5g/kg bolus (max bolus 15g)
- For Newborn Resuscitation:
- Newborn: 0.25g/kg bolus (max bolus 15g)
- Repeat: whilst indicated
- Max dose: no maximum
- Newborn: 0.25g/kg bolus (max bolus 15g)
Note: IV line must be flushed with 10mL NaCl at the completion of administration or prior to the administration of other medications.
