A
  • Route: IV
  • Onset: 30sec
  • Peak: 30sec
  • Duration: Dependent on the severity of the hypoglycemic episode.

What are the uses/indications of glucose 10%?

A

Hypoglycemia: when BGL < 4mmol & decreased LOC.

Newborn resuscitation: When BGL < 2.6mmol.

What are the adverse effects of glucose 10%?

A
  • Tissue necrosis if extravasated from vein occurs.
  • May aggravate brain damage in head injuries and strokes
  • May precipitate Wernicke’s Encephalopathy in alcoholics with a thiamine deficiency.

What is the preparation and dosage of Glucose 10%?

A
  • Preparation: 10% - 50g per 500mL bag.
  • For Hypoglycemia:
    • < 10yo: 0.5g/kg bolus (max bolus 15g)
      • Repeat: whilst indicated
      • Max dose: no maximum
    • 10yo+: 15g bolus
      • Repeat: whilst indicated
      • Max dose: no maximum
  • For Newborn Resuscitation:
    • Newborn: 0.25g/kg bolus (max bolus 15g)
      • Repeat: whilst indicated
      • Max dose: no maximum

Note: IV line must be flushed with 10mL NaCl at the completion of administration or prior to the administration of other medications.
