What type of medication is Ipratropium Bromide?
An Anticholinergic Bronchodilator. It blocks the parasympathetic nerve reflexes that cause the airway muscles to constrict by opposing the action of the neurotransmitter Acetylcholine.
What are the actions of Ipratropium Bromide?
Bronchodilation.
Blocks vagal reflexes which mediate bronchoconstriction.
Synergistic when used in combination with Salbutamol (Ventolin).
What is the route for Ipratropium Bromide administration, and the associated onset, peak and duration?
NEB: onset 3-5min, peak N/A, duration 2-4hrs.
What conditions indicate administration of Ipratropium Bromide?
Asthma.
COPD exacerbation.
What are the adverse effects of Ipratropium Bromide?
Mild anticholinergic effects, e.g. urinary retention, dry mouth, blurred vision, pupil dilation.
What are the contraindications of Ipratropium Bromide?
Allergy or hypersensitivity to Ipratropium Bromide.
Glaucoma.
What is the appropriate dose of Ipratropium Bromide for Asthma/COPD?
If the patient is <6yrs old, the correct dose is one 250mcg in 1ml nebule administered via nebuliser, with one repeat for a max dose of 500mcg.
If the patient is 6yrs or older, the correct dose is one 500mcg in 1ml nebule administered via nebuliser, with one repeat for a max dose of 1mg.
