What were salami tactics?
Used to describe Stalin’s 1945-47 tactics, where he would defeat an opponent by taking off one ‘slice’ at a time
- Described Soviet’s increase of sphere of influence by spreading communism along iron curtain
What was the result of salami tactics?
The creation of the Eastern bloc and satellite states which created a buffer zone around the Soviet Union, protecting its borders from direct conflict instead of proxy wars.
This disregarded the intent of the Potsdam conference, as communism was often forced instead of democracy and self-determination through free elections.
When did mot states turn communist?
Albania, Bulgaria, Romania and Czechoslovakia became communist in 1945
Poland and Hungary in 1947
What was the Truman Doctrine?
US’ response (1947) to long telegram and salmi tactics by giving aid to Greece and Turkey which were at risk of turning communist. It aimed to strengthen countries financially and economically to lessen the appeal of communism.
What was the effect of the Truman Doctine?
- Created us and them culture within US
- Promoted capitalism and a suspicion of non-supporters, as well as marked the development of a new foreign policy of containment instead of isolationism.
What was the policy of containment?
The act of preventing further growth and influence of a rival or opponent, taking actions (for the US) to prevent the spread of communism.
What was the Marshall Plan?
Similar to the Truman Doctrine, but was open to anyone - even communist states. Marshall aid was given as $13 billion for economic recovery of Europe, where countries received food, fuel and machinery. Free trade was made, and market aid was also given, where the US invested in European industry.
What was the impact of the Marshall Plan in Europe?
23% increase in industrial economies and agricultural growth was back to pre-war figures.
The media was not told, as taxpayers may not have favoured the program. 3,000 Europeans visit the US for education and liberalism was spread
